Brief Outage

There was a brief outage (a few hours) for my site today, it was all my fault. I waited until the last second to renew my domain and Godaddy reverted it to their default parked page. Everything should be back to normal now though.

Not a whole lot of news to report today.. I had the whole weekend off, Saturday Mae and I went to the Como Zoo for a bit, it was surprisingly busy though, so we didn’t stay too long. Didn’t even get a chance to hit up the Conservatory due to a wedding. Lame. After the zoo we stopped home to grab some things, followed by a stop at Target for some garlic bread, and we headed to my dad’s house for dinner. Lasagna plus our garlic bread, and it was quite tasty. We watched some TV while the dinner was cooking, played some Wii after dinner and left there a little after midnight.

It was a pretty early night, followed by Mae leaving around 1pm for work and me sleeping for a while after that. I got up and got the domain issue sorted shortly before Robert got home and starting playing Resistance.

The Twins lost yesterday, as did the White Sox; and both clubs won today. Now as I mentioned previously, the White Sox play the Tigers tomorrow to make up a game that got rained out earlier in the season. If the White Sox win, we play them on Tuesday in a one game playoff to decide who gets first place for the American League Central. If they lose, we clinch the central and go to the playoffs. First pitch is tomorrow at 1:05 CDT, so be ready.

Time to go find some grub.

Sweep? Sure, why not?

Nick Punto Scores Winning Run In The 10th Inning - Photo Credit: Paul Battaglia / AP

Today was a good day off. I got some more information regarding some possible changes at work, I sat on the couch ALL DAY, and the Twins SWEPT the White Sox.

I didn’t get to see the beginning of the game because Bill put in 10,000 BC, but as soon as that was over he went to bed and I turned the game on. I had been keeping tabs on the game on the ESPN GameCast, so I was well aware that we had gone from a 1-0 lead in the 3rd, to losing 1-6 in the top of the 4th. I turned the game on right when the comeback started. I watched through the middle innings as both teams were deadlocked, and on into the 10th inning when Gomez’s blooper to center field brought Punto home to win the game, sweep the series, and regain sole possession first place in the American League Central for the first time since August 23rd. Having been in the Metrodome for the final game of the regular season in 2006 against the White Sox, I know what the atmosphere is like inside The Dome in the final innings of a critical game that can make or break a hope for October.

Now it get’s real tricky. We have a three game series at home against Kansas City, and the White Sox host the Indians for three games to end the regular season. However, if the Twins and White Sox are still within 1/2 a game of each other on Sunday, the White Sox have to play a makeup game against the Tigers on Monday. If after that game the Twins and White Sox are tied for first place, they will have to play a one game playoff on Tuesday.

So basically we sweep the Royals and hope that the Indians can take at least one game from Chicago. Today’s win brings the Twins’ magic number down to four. Any combination of four Twins wins or Chicago losses secures the AL Central.

It’s going to be an interesting weekend.

Review: Google Chrome

You may have heard, but chances are you didn’t try it out. Google released it’s own web browser a few days ago called Chrome. I decided to install it today, and was quickly frustrated and gave up. Did I give it a real chance? Not really. But it was not a pleasant experience. While several of the features are very cool and innovative, others are severely lacking and annoying.

Wins:

  • Each tab runs as it’s own process. This is useful if a page causes something to crash, the whole browser doesn’t eat it too.
  • Tabs are listed ABOVE the URL bar. This is useful because it keeps things more organized, and easier to read, in my opinion.
  • When you start a new tab, it shows your recently viewed pages, complete with thumbnails. While this isn’t all that spectacular, it’s pretty neat.
  • Incognito mode. This is kinda cool, as it lets you keep all systems normal and run one window that doesn’t save any information about your session.

However, there were a lot of things that I didn’t like.

Opps:

  • In most applications (including Firefox and IE) when you click the center wheel button on your mouse, a small circle appears with up and down arrows inside. When you move ABOVE the circle icon, the page scrolls up. When you go BELOW it, it goes down. Simple, right? Well this was not available at all.
  • The customization options are very minimal.
  • Java does not work. I had to install two different versions of the Java Runtime in order to get a game to play, and it still didn’t work right. The applet ended up not responding, and I had to quit. Annoying.
  • No plugins. Anyone who’s used Firefox will agree that it needs plugins. Like AdBlock.

Basically, it’s a nice idea, but it’s not for everyone. I will stick with Firefox for now because it does what I want it do, even if it does take up enough memory for three people’s browser session. I won’t say don’t use it, but I will say don’t get your hopes up.

How About A Gold W?

As I mentioned on Monday, Mitch Hedberg released an album of mostly new material that was recorded in 2005 just before his death. If you’re a fan, listen to it, you will laugh.

In addition to that, I also had a listen to Metallica’s new album Death Magnetic. I had heard the single “The Day That Never Comes” on the radio a few times, and everyone who talked about the album said it was a lot less like St. Anger and a lot more like Ride The Lightning. I’d say that I mostly agree with them, aside from James’ singing. I’d say it’s worth a listen, especially if you were a Metallica fan that was turned away by the atrocity that was St. Anger.

In other news, today is my day off. Last night after work Ben and Jenn accompanied Robert and myself to the bar. Mae was in River Falls with friends so she didn’t make it. I broke the pinky toe on my left foot over the weekend, and the swelling is just starting to go down. The black and blue coloring in my foot is going away too. I guess I picked up a cold somewhere this week too because I felt like crap on Tuesday and Wednesday, but DayQuil is helping out with that.

There is a little over a month left for our remodel at work. We’ve slowly been getting more and more cameras online and moving further and further away from the archaic CCTV system and moving to the new all digital system. Soon our office won’t be cluttered with the CCTV system alongside the two digital video workstations and we can reclaim our desk space.

I’m not entirely sure what the plans are for the rest of the day, Mae has school followed by work tonight, so she won’t be around until 9:30 or so. Might head over to BWW with dad and Liz (and possibly Jenny) for dinner. Otherwise ramen will suffice.

That is all.

Two Things Of Note

Not a whole lot to update on, it was a pretty average weekend. I broke my baby toe on my left foot, everything else was pretty boring..

Two things of note though for today:

1) Minnesota Twins name new stadium “Target Field” – Target Corp. signed an estimated $100M deal with the Minnesota Twins for naming rights in a 25 year deal for the new 40,000 seat stadium.

2) Mitch Hedberg released a new album on September 9th, Do You Believe In Gosh? If you’re a fan, or maybe even if you aren’t, you should listen. I did, twice, and I laughed more than I have in a while. There are a few of his older jokes mixed in, but it’s nearly all new material.

That is all.

What Made Me Start My Own Blog?

This post is a part of Blog Block, which is a new series co-developed by myself and Cass, and presented by Kayla and the Surpass Hosting Blog.

This edition asks: What made you want to start your own blog?

I have been creating websites for about 8 years, but I didn’t really get into blogging until very recently. A lot of people (including myself) don’t really consider an online journal to be the same as a blog, so that is why I say it was only recently that I started “blogging”. I have used Livejournal since early 2003, and I used a site called OpenDiary before that. But those were journals, which focused primarily on the happenings in my life, which is why I didn’t really consider it to be a blog.

Recently, more and more of my posts pertain to other things in the world, in addition to updates about me and my life. I think that mixing the two will allow me to reach a wider audience and share some of my knowledge with people who might stumble upon my site or one of my posts. When I first started writing in my Livejournal, it was mostly directed to a few close friends, as most others wouldn’t really understand a whole lot of the details. I’ve learned that keeping posts more vague and avoiding such detail helps cater the post to everyone, and allows them to understand it a little better.

A few people who have responded to this week’s topic have stated that they often find themselves unsatisfied with their blog’s content and delete it after a few weeks or months. I did clean out my Livejournal once about a year after I started it, which was mostly due to nonsensical posts and large gaps between them. Since then, I have had periods of time where I will write daily, sometimes numerous times a day, or I will go several months without posting anything. Now that I am mixing more blog style content into my journal, it allows me to post things to share with my readers without the need for a potentially time consuming update about my (generally boring) life.

If you would like to respond to this week’s topic, all you need to do is write your reason for why you started your own blog and post a link to your entry on the Surpass Blog.

Review: Black Snake Moan

Black Snake Moan

I first heard of this movie a little over two years ago. I saw the trailer when I watched the sneak preview of Snakes On A Plane, which really didn’t shed a whole lot of light on what the movie was really about. I was left wanting to see it, but I still wasn’t really sure why.

Last night when I popped in the DVD, I still wasn’t really sure what to expect, or what I was in for. The only real information I had was from a friend who told me that the beginning is a little jacked up, so I have to make sure I give it a chance. So I did. I watched the movie, and even now, I still don’t really know what I think of it.

From the trailer alone, I thought it was a movie about Zeek (Samuel L. Jackson) taking Rae (Christina Ricci) hostage as a sex slave in his house. However, his real intentions were to cure her of her scandalous ways. Zeek helps Rae recover after being beaten by her boyfriend’s best friend, and helps her discover what she really wants.

I would recommend the movie, with the same note that I received before I watched it. Don’t give up on it, it gets better. Samuel L. Jackson also has some pretty good singing and guitar playing in the movie, which was actually quite a surprise to me.
